HiWi Stelle Institute for Micro- and Nanostructure Research (WW9)
Hallo liebe Informatiker,

The Institute of Micro- and Nanostructure Research (IMN) & Center for Nanoanalysis and Electron Microscopy (CENEM) at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg offer a

Student Assistant Position (HiWi)
for
Systematic Image Analysis and Video Processing

High-resolution, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) characterization of complex materials at various length scales is required to reveal important properties like morphology, (crystal) structure and chemical composition that influence the material’s performance in its application. At IMN (www.em.tf.fau.de), we explore the structural properties of a plethora of different material systems, for instance catalysts, metal alloys or 2D materials, using state-of-the-art electron and X-ray microscopy instruments available at CENEM (www.cenem.fau.de).

For a systematic exploration, advanced correlative microscopy workflows require a dedicated framework of data analysis by employing, e.g., Python, Matlab, R or Java programming. Hence, we are seeking a highly motivated student for further development of our libraries. The applicants should have some experience in code development in Python, Java, Matlab, C++ or R (or similar) and be willing to help with other responsibilities like video processing of online lecture recordings.

The IMN, a research institute of the Materials Science Department, explores the advanced capabilities of CENEM, a well-established microscopy center and user facility at the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. The CENEM hosts a number of state-of-the-art electron and X-ray microscopes, among these a Zeiss Xradia 810 Ultra, a double-corrected monochromated (S)TEM Titan Themis3 60-300, a probe-corrected (S)TEM Cold-FEG Spectra 30-200 and a FIB-SEM Helios Nanolab 660. Our equipment further includes specific holders for EDXS tomography, 360° ET, rotational dual-axis ET and in situ heating TEM/ET.

We offer working in a great team and expanding electron microscopy group within a vibrant scientific environment. Scientific discussion, the process of creating own ideas and the possibility to implement them are key elements of our research philosophy. The work can be performed at home or on-site at the institute according to the rules concerning the Covid-19 pandemic.
The salary is according to German standard depending on the applicant’s academic degree and agreed working hours (https://www.intern.fau.de/files/2019/08/Verguetungstabelle_2020_EF_MiLoG.pdf).
The position will be filled as soon as possible with estimated working hours of 10hr/week.

The FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg is interested in increasing the share of women in research and teaching positions and therefore explicitly encourages female candidates to apply.
Physically disabled applicants receive favorable consideration when equally qualified.

Please send your application until 30. April 2021 by e-mail to Janis Wirth (janis.wirth@fau.de) and/or Benjamin Apeleo Zubiri (benjamin.apeleo.zubiri@fau.de).
